We can really say that digitalization was accelerated during 2021. Some businesses adapted better than others and live streams were one of those things that blew up entirely. Live streams allowed people to really stay engaged during their isolation, whether on a personal level or professional level. Zoom conferences are a typical example of that, even live concerts became a thing! Celebrities also created discussion groups around various topics to chat with their fans and provide a sort of moral support for everyone around who just needed some type of human connection. This trend is expected to continue for a while. 


Social commerce

As a lot of businesses had to take their activities online during the pandemic, the internet also saw a rise in the creation of small businesses, particularly in the fashion industry. Facebook and Instagram have made it easier for these brands to sell online and helped marketers capitalize on these products by using the tools available on these platforms. It simplifies the customer journey and reduces the rate of “abandoned transactions” that often happen on websites. 


Purpose-driven campaigns

It was already something quite prevalent before the pandemic but even more so during the pandemic. People want to help and they want brands to help too. A survey done on Twitter showed that 77% of the respondents feel more positively about companies that show some type of support towards society during a crisis. Unilever did a job at that by donating supplies worth €100 million to people in need. 


Augmented Reality

There was definitely a surge in overall social media use last year. Instagram and Snapchat filters were used and abused, and made the overall engagement more fun. For brands, it was the chance to shine and create something cool and dynamic by playing with filters and other fun ‘games’ to keep their customers entertained while displaying their products on the screen. This trend will likely continue to grow too as virtual reality and smartphones in general are getting more advanced.
