LinkedIn and Freelancers - a new love story?

Aaah LinkedIn, what a great platform. Have you also spent 3 days straight looking and applying for jobs only to be rejected by everyone? Yup, we’ve all been through this. Still, it’s a cool platform. At least it was until LinkedIn influencers started becoming a thing - you know, the ones who post statuses constantly about motivational stuff and fake things that didn’t happen to them while hiring someone just to sound really deep. Anyway. Well, now LinkedIn is launching a marketplace specifically for … FREELANCERS. Exciting right? Let’s get into more detail.

As working from home has become the new mainstream, a lot of people are finding innovative ways to make this new way of life lucrative for themselves. Which is great because companies have had to either shut down or will most probably not start hiring anytime soon. But working from home is convenient and advantageous if done right, and even people who were initially sceptical of social media platforms like LinkedIn are learning to embrace its benefits. The younger generations seem to increasingly prefer being their own boss as opposed to working for someone else and this is causing a shift in the dynamics of society - which is good, as it also challenges big corporations to adjust and be more open to flexible working hours and other aspects of the workplace like working from home. As a leading digital marketing agency based in the UAE, this is an interesting shift from the conventional ways we are so used to.

In 2010, an Israeli freelancing company called Fiverr launched and started getting a lot of traction recently since the pandemic started, competing indirectly with LinkedIn. So now, LinkedIn decided to do the same. Indeed, this is a smart move  considering that freelancing is growing exponentially now with young professionals and fresh graduates looking for something easy and part-time. Freelancing used to be more popular with white-collar workers like app developers or coaches with very sought-after skills - but now, it is accessible to everyone.

This also allows small businesses to partner up with people whose services are affordable. For example, it is probably cheaper for a start-up to hire someone on a part time basis to do some consulting work for them instead of paying a consulting firm to do it. It’s making the market more competitive. The freelancing version of LinkedIn will allow customers to shop around for attractive rates and the relevant services, as the profiles of the freelancers who are offering their services will be subject to reviews and ratings from the people/companies they’ve worked with. This is great. As a leading digital marketing agency operating in the UAE, we understand that this could change the life of thousands of start-ups who cannot afford to pay full-time employees while still getting quality services from the best people around. This incredible move from LinkedIn is showing once again how companies have to adapt and adjust to new trends, and it’s working really well for everyone.
