Is Facebook a bad Apple?

Welcome to a new episode of Facebook’s beef with the rest of the world. Uh oh, what is happening this time? Well, now it’s with Apple.

Apple has recently announced that there will be a new big change for privacy settings for iOS users, which has affected Facebook. Just like oil, data has become one of the most valuable things in the world for companies and a powerful tool, so much so that tech giants are going to war over it.  Apple plans on updating the software to make privacy a more visible feature. Facebook has been very lucrative to this point, mostly because of the fact that users’ data were sold to other companies for advertising purposes but Apple is now making this process more difficult for Facebook to get hold of this data. As a leading digital marketing agency operating in the UAE, this could also affect us in the long term - it’s imperative for businesses to be clever and innovative enough to find their way around this new update.

Facebook has been fighting Apple in a very public manner (of course), stating that this move from Apple will limit businesses’ ability to run personalised ads and reach their customers effectively - basically putting all the blame on Apple. Some studies done by Facebook showed that if this software update was to happen, the small businesses who advertise online will see a 60% cut in their sales for every dollar they spend. It sounds pretty bad. You might be thinking: “Oh but if Facebook can’t have my data, Apple will have it anyway, so what is the difference.” Well, the thing with Apple is that it doesn’t collect your data or sell it for commercial purposes, and is standing up for users’ right to privacy. Go Apple, woooh!

Anyway. What could come out of this update is the fact that users will see less ads and more of the content that they had signed up for initially. Apple will actively ask users if the data they are sharing could be made available to Facebook or not. Facebook is almost playing the victim by saying that Apple has too much monopoly (the irony) and is being unreasonable. Apple is however unlikely to back down and other platforms like Google are being less aggressive about the changes, and even compliant, trying to make this work for them.  As a leading digital marketing agency based in the UAE, we’ve applied all our tricks to help businesses grow their presence online organically without paid advertising - this is already a great way to counter this update from Apple in a more genuine way as a renowned agency. We can help you anticipate this.
