India’s war on social media platforms

Oh no! India is cancelling social media ..? Back in February, the country had announced some rules for platforms Facebook and Twitter to abide by, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to operate within the country. The “significant social media intermediaries” deadline ended on the 25th of May and the new rules came into effect on the 26th of May. Basically, if the platforms fail to fall in line, they will risk losing their intermediary status.

Do you know the worst part about this? Free speech is attacked from all sides. Basically, this new rule allows for anyone (the government included) to take the social media platforms giants to court (as well as the person who posted the content) if they are unhappy with a piece of content in question. For example, if someone is criticizing the government, the government can take this person as well as the platform to court. This sounds a lot like North Korea. It can be anything from obscene pictures all the way to impersonation, and these people who don’t comply will be “criminally liable” for any content deemed illegal.

Of course, the tech giants have resisted this new rule saying that free speech and fair communication will be jeopardised and will subsequently lead to the population becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the new system. WhatsApp has actually already filed a lawsuit in Delhi against the government for violation of privacy rights. As a leading digital marketing agency operating in the UAE, this will affect many businesses and people on an unprecedented scale because in the end, the government is fully in charge of what is deemed appropriate to be posted on social media and that sounds a lot like propaganda. It’s starting small but it could soon take much bigger proportions as the government will soon have full control over what is being shared online. Facebook and Twitter are still trying to negotiate - stay tuned to see where this goes.
