Food-for-thought this International Women’s Month

For this International Women’s Month’s blog, we’ll talk about some really awesome and inspiring women around the world who are making a difference in advertising, marketing and the media world overall, and who are working tirelessly to make these industries more inclusive. Let’s start!

We all know it, marketing and advertising are about selling. Unfortunately in the past decades, women were suffering tremendously from typical stereotypes. You know, the usual “Want to lose weight?” or “Want to make your skin look younger?” or “Here, try this foundation that will hide your natural traits.” It never seemed to be a problem until recently and in the 21st century we live in, there is definitely a need for a more genuine and honest portrayal of women, whether as a consumer or in the workplace.  Because yes, it’s exhausting and mentally damaging for women to try and be perfect 24/7, while still having to go through some other major social issues such as the gender wage gap or other types of sexism overall.

Business Insider designated a few women in leadership across media, branding and advertising industries to talk about their accomplishments and how to improve the gender gap and improve the portrayal of women in marketing. Here at Mint Stalk, a leading Digital Marketing Agency operating in the UAE, we are proud to say that 80% of our employees are women with the founder of Mint Stalk, Alyssa Al-maiahi, being a woman herself. Woop Woop! Without further ado, here are the inspiring women making a difference:

  • Pooja Jauhari, CEO, The Glitch. She stated in a video on her Twitter that having more women in the workplace provides a balance for the workforce and adds greater creativity. It’s in women’s nature to nurture and being able to merge their empathy, balance and intelligence with talent and skills is incredibly valuable, and those characteristics to shine more.

  • Malini Agarwal, Founder of MissMalini. She believes that the beauty, cosmetic and fashion industries need to change drastically. She says that there has definitely been an approach to ‘plus size’ fashion but in some places it feels forced and in others it feels like it’s fading. She does not think that using the word “plus” is necessary either, and should just be called “size”. Here at Mint Stalk, a leading Digital Marketing Agency based in the UAE, we fully agree and back this statement. She continues to say that the environmental aspect is also becoming increasingly important for companies, and that her and other female leaders within her company are on board with it already. She also mentions being ‘fed-up’ with Indian ads portraying fair skin as opposed to diversity.

  • Juhi Bhatnagar, Strategy & BD at Snap Inc. She is stating that working in the tech industry requires a diversity of perspectives and opinions, which requires companies to diversify on the basis of gender to be able to speak to the younger generations better, as youngsters are becoming more and more impatient with the old and traditional system. There is a digital skills gap that has become evident during the pandemic according to her and she wants to push women to empower themselves through technological skills, critical thinking and problem solving.

The list could go on forever but we thought these 3 were the best one to summarise what this whole campaign from Advertising and Media Insider was all about. The marketing industry is a competitive one and we agree that the gender diversity and the diversity of ideas as a result is what makes the workplace a better place.
